Research shows that by increasing our deep breathing not only do we reduce stress and increase our alertness, but we also improve our mood and boost our immune system too. This is great news because our breath is ALWAYS with us – this tool will never leave our side. The hard part is making it a habit to use our breath intentionally.

Our breath helps us pause, be mindful, and reset our mind and body, and it can be a very effective tool in easing chronic pain.

By experiencing the natural rhythm of our breath, the rise and fall of our belly, the returning sensation throughout our body… we can ground ourselves in the present moment. When our brain is running wild or when our body is experiencing a heightened pain response, when we are feeling anxious, when we feel irritable…taking intentional breaths can give us the momentary pause that we need to come back to ourselves and pivot the outcome of any situation

Try it with me now, take a deep breath in for 5 seconds….and then together let’s take an even longer exhale…and again…as we take just one intentional breath, our nervous system already begins to respond. Notice your heart rate slow down, notice how you become more conscious of your surroundings…more aware of your body…and more relaxed

We said it once and we’ll say it again – your breath is a tool that you can use at any moment, it will never leave you and it can always help you to be more mindful.

“If you want to conquer the anxiety of life, live in the moment, live in the breath.” (Amit Ray, Om Chanting and Meditation)
