The Dario App enables you to check your blood sugar and tag and record your measurements pre and post-meal (1 – 2 hours after each meal), add the type of carbohydrates you ate in the meal, and get valuable information on your diabetes management related to nutrition.

According to the ADA, non-pregnant adults should aim for an A1c of less than 7%1:

Before meals, you should aim to have a blood sugar reading of between 70-130 mg/dL (3.9-7.2 mmol/L), and a peak reading (1-2 hours after a meal) of less than 180 mg/dL (10.0 mmol/L).

Your personal goal will be determined together with your healthcare provider based on a number of factors: how long you have had your condition, your age, other conditions you may have, complications, hypoglycemia events without signs, and your personal decisions and choices, etc.

The best way to understand and maintain your A1c goals is through self-monitoring throughout the day (fasting, after meals and at bedtime).

Place your blood glucose average target goal in one of the groups described in table 1 (A-E)2.

Table 1: Average glucose levels (mg/dL / mmol/L) before and after meals for specified HbA1c levels determined based on observational study of 470 type 1 and type 2 participants 2.

Do your values match one of the groups in the table?

For example:

If you find yourself in group A:

Your average of blood glucose before meals is 118 mg/dL (6.6 mmol/L) and within the range of 115-121 mg/dL (6.4-6.7 mmol/L)

And, your average blood glucose after meals is 144 mg/dL (8.0 mmol/L), within the range of 139-148 mg/dL  (7.7-8.2 mmol/L)

How can you use this table?

  • On the “SET MY GOAL” screen, add the target values that you have set with your healthcare provider
  • Place yourself in one of the groups A-E based on your blood glucose average
  • Measure your pre-meal values. If values are higher than your target goal check your treatment plan with your
    healthcare provider
  • Measure your post-meal values and record the meal consumed
  • Ask yourself, are the results of the glucose values monitored with Dario matching your goals at different
times throughout the day? Pre-meal? Post-meal?
  • Compare different meals and their post-meal glucose measurements
  • Adapt the preferred and best meals in your routine diet to meet your goals

The ranges in the above table describe groups of people with diabetes and their sugar values before and after meals.
Note that post meal values of groups A-C are below 180 mg/dL (10.0 mmol/L). Monitoring before and after meals allows you to understand the effect of food eaten and prevent sugar peaks after meals. This can help you to control sugar values and achieve an optimal balance of diabetes.
