When should I check and how often?

Diabetes is as individual as you are. You should test as recommended by your doctor, and according to your treatment and lifestyle.

Here are some general recommendations for testing:

  • Usually four tests per day – before/after meals and/or before bedtime – to understand blood sugar level fluctuations.
  • To understand the effect of a meal on your blood sugar levels, measure 1.5-2 hours after the beginning of a meal.
  • Those who have recently undergone a treatment change are advised to increase the number of blood sugar measurements to monitor the effect of treatment throughout the day.
  • Fasting – usually in the morning after having nothing to eat or drink for 8 hours.

People with well-controlled diabetes should aim to test up to four times a day as this will provide additional information for you and your health care team to adjust  your treatment plan as necessary.

In the event of changes in lifestyle or general condition such as: illness, change in diet, change in weight or exercise patterns, or any change in the normal state, it is recommended to increase monitoring for several days, this can help you and your physician decide whether you need to change your treatment plan.2

For people with non-insulin dependent diabetes, recommendations will be given according to your treatment plan.

American Diabetes Association recommendations for in-range blood sugar levels

Post meal <180mg/dL / <10.0 mmol/L

Pre meal 80-130mg/dL / 4.4-7.2 mmol/L

It is important to emphasize that keeping blood sugar levels within your range has proven to be a very important factor in maintaining balance and preventing complications. 2

Understanding patterns and trends is something that Dario coaches work to have our members understand. Remember, the more you test, the more you track, the more you know about what affects your blood sugar the most!
