The human body consists of several systems, one of which is the musculoskeletal system. The musculoskeletal system is known as the movement system. It comprises the bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, and connective tissues that help support your body weight and allow you to move. Injuries, aging, and congenital disorders can cause limitation of movement and pain. By exercising regularly, eating a balanced diet, maintaining a healthy weight, and getting plenty of sleep, we can ensure that our bodies are mobile and healthy.

A healthy musculoskeletal system brings a lot of benefits such as reduced coronary risk factors, reduced risk of osteoporosis, increased flexibility, improved glucose tolerance, and greater tolerance to complete and achieve your activities of daily living (ADLs).

When the body is not taken care of properly, we start to develop conditions of the musculoskeletal system, and are more susceptible to injuries like:

  • Arthritis – osteoarthritis due to the natural aging process
  • Back pains
  • Osteoporosis – more prone to fractures
  • Frequent falls

Regular exercise and physical activity are crucial factors for a healthy musculoskeletal system. Unfortunately, painful conditions may cause avoidance or fear of movement and therefore stop someone from exercising which leads to deconditioning and further disability. The bottom line is – you need to keep moving to maintain a healthy musculoskeletal system.
