Dealing with Hypoglycemia, the Dario Way
Hypoglycemia is a deficiency of glucose in the bloodstream, also known as low blood sugar. While it can happen to anyone at any time, it is particularly prevalent for people living with diabetes and when severe it can be very worrisome.
In fact, a study published by Diabetic Medicine[1] monitored a random sample 267 people with insulin-treated diabetes. After only 1 month, the research showed that 58% of the sample group had a hypoglycemic event.
Additionally, a report by Diabetes Care[2] examined hypoglycemia in employed people with insulin-treated diabetes to ascertain the frequency and consequences of this problem in the workplace.
This study focused on 243 employed people over a 12-month period. When the results were published, it showed that each participant, on average, had eight self-treated episodes and approximately one severe hypoglycemic incident, which required someone else’s assistance (238 episodes).
Furthermore, of the severe hypoglycemic episodes, 23% of them occurred when the person was neither at home nor in the office. Case in point, hypos can happen at any time and when they do it can be frightening, especially when it is a severe case or if you are alone.
Preventative measures like being meticulous about your medications, eating accordingly (including drinking alcohol responsibly), and making sure you’re exercising appropriately, can keep low blood sugar in check. In addition, making sure you have an emergency pack of food or snack to help bring numbers up can also help; however, these methods may not always be enough to fully prevent or deal with a hypoglycemic episode.
